Display Cases Exhibition
The art of Chinese painting and calligraphy has most often been understood as a meditative journey of the artist himself; and the work as an existential record of time. Accompanied by visual text, in this set of three mini-installations, Charles has taken a special interest in the tools/media itself, the “four treasures” of paper, brush, ink and ink stone, reflecting on the simplicity, plurality and beauty of the tools, materials and the world. A contemporary artist on his own, Charles will be hosting a Chinese ink wash and calligraphy introductory workshop open to all aged 15+ at the RCA beginning mid-Jan 2018.
Charles is a Hong Kong born contemporary artist who has held various solo art exhibitions in Vancouver, Hong Kong and Beijing previously. His work, mostly in paintings and mega-size installations, titled “Mountain Vastness” (Black series 2013, and White Series 2014), has been described by many art critics as drawing inspiration from calligraphy, architecture and technology. Having lived in London UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing, Montreal and Vancouver, the artist is now calling Kelowna home where he is pursuing a new colour mountain series.
