What is Music of Heavens?

The Music of Heavens is a community-based creation of a live musical and multimedia visual animated performance told through images of ancient astrological stories exploring myths and belief systems that make up our rich multicultural fabric of Canadian society.

Inspired by ancient legends of the stars in Chinese, Greek, and First Nations cultures, this project features original interdisciplinary compositions of cross-cultural animated visuals and music. Our team of visual artists, animators, music composers, instrumentalists, and software developers have come together to create an immersive audio-visual inter-arts performance.

We now reach forward for you to join our effort in creating this interdisciplinary project as Canadian community members.

About the workshop

The final portion of the performance will be developed from this free community-based stop-motion animation workshop ran by UBC Okanagan fine arts professor Dr. Aleksandra Dulic and UBC Okanagan fine arts alumni Jessica Dennis. Workshop participants (that’s you!) are invited to create and craft their own stars that represent their unique cultural heritage, then animate them using stop-motion techniques under the tutelage of Dulic and Dennis.

In collaboration with our community partners; all ages, abilities, and interested groups will be credited as co-contributors, and their work will be celebrated and featured in the final Music of Heavens public performance, as well as be granted free admission to the concert in November 2017.

The workshop is 3 hours long and accessible to all ages and abilities. If you’ve ever been interested in stop-motion animation, this is a free workshop you should be sure to check out!

For details and registration, contact Dawn at programs@rotarycentreforthearts.com, 250-717-5304.
