Description of the Show:
Provoke is a showcase of two dance works that are meant to help be a conversation starter on topics that have become more prevalent in today’s society, by providing a different platform to share an interpretation of these topics to hopefully bring newfound exposure and understanding for audience members while provoking deeper conversations afterwards.

The first work is called No. 5 and explores the idea of what happens in the mind for someone who has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (A.D.H.D.). A.D.H.D. is a medical condition where an individual has difficulty perceiving multiple thoughts at one time, the tendency towards impulsive decision making and the urge to remain constantly active with movement. For some, there are times when their thoughts feel intertwined; orbiting around each other or around the main focal point while suddenly switching between thoughts. Previous thoughts could still be lingering around for a short time and may contradict new ones that may appear. On the contrary, others may get into a state of hyper-focusing on a single item and are unable to pull themselves away from it for a set period of time. Pulling from my personal experience, I want to share what some people with A.D.H.D. go through, which can be very difficult to explain with words alone. The orbiting thoughts, the hyper-focus, the emptiness in between prevalent thoughts and other thoughts in the fore and background. Each dancer is a physical embodiment of a “thought” within a manifestation of thoughts that are in a visual mindscape. I hope with this work, it can provide an accurate depiction for those who live with this mental disorder so it can enlighten others and truly describe what we experience.

The second work will be a brand new creation entitled Restrict and takes a look at how conformity plays a larger role in our society than we may realize. There are different hierarchic systems in place that were taught to us as being normal when we were growing up. A few good examples would be our education system from elementary to post-secondary schooling, promotions at our place of work and our perception of social status. Essentially, through our upbringing we constantly strive to be a dedicated student, worker, a new manager or a strong socialite with not much second thought since that it was what we were taught to understand - a predetermined path laid out in front of us to follow and the notion for us to stay on track. Our society is run like a well-oiled machine and anyone who tries to stray away into their own path either get secluded and forced to rejoin the order and it’s that “stray or stay” concept that will be explored.
