March 7, 2023International Woman's Day 2023

March 8th, 2023 is International Women’s Day! IWD is an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about women's equality, and highlight organizations that focus on the needs and aspirations of all women.

At the RCA, we're proud to uplift and celebrate the work of diverse women artists. From the local artists we feature in our galleries, to performers in the Mary Irwin Theatre, the RCA would not be what it is today if not for the talented, hard-working, women in our community. Today, and every day, we want to recognize the amazing women on our team as well as spotlight some exciting experiences you can look forward to this month at the RCA featuring some incredible women.

Pictured here are Chelsea Boan (Community Engagement & Events Coordinator), Laura Schultz (Marketing Manager), Nicole Benson (Facility Rentals Coordinator), Emily Stubbs (Marketing & Communications Coordinator), and Colleen Fitzpatrick (Executive Director), part of our wonderful team of women that help keep the RCA afloat.

In honour of IWD this year, we’ve got a special performance from some of Canada’s most talented comedians in RCA Presents: Yuk Yuk’s - I am Woman Hear Me Laugh! Laugh the night away with Canadian fan favourite Jane Stanton, BC's Funniest Female 2014 finalist Amber Harper-Young, and award-winning comedian Sharon Mahoney. Happening Thursday, March 9th in the Mary Irwin Theatre, we’re excited to celebrate IWD with some hilarious stand-up comedy. The perfect “girls' night out”! Only a few tickets remain for this popular show.

Stop by RCA’s  Mezzanine gallery space to see Holly Dagenais's exhibition, My Pronouns are that b*tch: A visual collection of strong women, non-binary and Queer folks. Holly emerged as an artist in the early 2000s as a stencil artist on the streets of Winnipeg, Manitoba. To challenge the idea that street art/graffiti subculture can be a “boys club,” they were inspired to create these works as a space for feminist art.

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, located inside the RCA, has a captivating exhibition in it’s window space; What’s Mine is Yours, by local artist Sofie Lovelady. Lovelady’s art reflects the representation of bodies in media, and archival images from vintage and contemporary advertisements and mass-circulated graphics. Through these found images and text, her work is a powerful statement on the over-sexualization of women in popular media. What’s Mine is Yours is on view until March 18th.

The RCA prides itself in being a space where women from all walks of life can express themselves through the arts. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the achievements of these phenomenal artists. Happy International Women's Day from all of us at the RCA!
