Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art
The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is a registered non-profit charitable organization dedicated to the development of our creative community. Since 1989, the Alternator has shown the work of emerging Canadian artists and helped develop the talents of local artists by providing a network of collaboration and sharing. We believe in the greater positive potential of our creative community and value our role as key contributors to the cultural life of Kelowna and beyond.
Fostering energetic, creative, critical discussion on art and culture, the Alternator offers year-round exhibitions of contemporary art in all media by regional, national and international artists. Artist talks, exchanges, workshops, panel discussions and other events promote awareness of contemporary art practices and create a forum for the exchange of ideas within the artistic community.
In addition to showing the works of professional artists, the Alternator offers many opportunities for local amateur and developing artists including use of the Members’ Gallery for exhibitions, performances and installations and our Artists Co-op, a short-term incubation space for local independent artists and arts groups, housed in Studio 111.
The Alternator is part of a national network of 150 artist-run centres and collectives that offer space for creative research and development in the arts. Artist-run centres are an accessible alternative to commercial and public galleries and have given early exhibition experience to many of Canada’s leading artists.
