Environment, Injustice and Re-telling History: Film Screenings

The Okanagan International Film Festival (OKIFF) celebrates Canadian, international and Indigenous cinema while supporting the continued growth of the Okanagan’s film and television industry. By bringing filmmakers, audiences and industry leaders together, OKIFF creates opportunities for connection and collaboration while showcasing the region as a premier destination for film production and creative talent.

What happens when an industrial invention escapes its container and alters the biology of every living species?

PLASTIC PANDEMIC pulls back the curtain on an invisible invasion. Tracing the path from petrochemical refineries into oceans, wildlife, and human cells, this documentary skips the usual talk about littering to reveal a much darker truth: synthetic waste is rewriting the natural world from the inside out—leaving the audience with one vital question.

1910 – The Uncovering (BC, language: English/Japanese) 27:00 minutes
For many years the only transportation link across Canada was one railway line. This tenuous ribbon of steel was built through high, snowy, and unpredictable mountains. The tragic avalanche that occurred at the Rogers Pass summit in March of 1910 remains Canada's deadliest. 58 railway workers, majority Japanese died while attempting to clear a snow slide from the tracks when another larger avalanche struck from the other side in the middle of the dark night. This documentary project also delves into the lives of two unlikely friends today, a downtown Vancouver businessman, and a Japanese-born ski guide brought together by their need for purpose, healing, and a shared passion for researching the mysteries and injustices of this event. During production, the team was surprised with a visit by a 1910 victim’s great grandson from Tokyo.

Illustrated Legacies: Graveyard of the Pacific (BC, language: English) 1:10:00 minutes
Illustrated Legacies: Graveyard of the Pacific reclaims coastal Indigenous history, tracing a continuum from ancient whaling practices to the upheaval of colonial conflict. Relying on oral traditions, and combining documentary form with animation, the film challenges mainstream Eurocentric narratives centering instead the vibrant lives and cultures of the original stewards of the lands and ocean. Through this lens a complicated history is reframed by the voices of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada’s west coast.
