In the Atrium

Artist Statement

My current painting practice begins without preconceived ideas, simply with intuitive play. I get lost in moving colors around, seeing how they interact, and how they feel. I especially love scraping paint away to reveal a hint of what is underneath and emphasizing texture. Once something intriguing starts to appear I try to step back and consider the composition, the values, what is missing. I would like to evoke a sense of mystery, like something has been obscured. Often, a painting will take me in many different directions, many potential paintings emerge and get buried in the layers of paint. Fortunately, this process is so compelling in and of itself, it keeps me moving forward, excited to see what comes next.

Artist Biography

I have always had creative instincts, primarily, drawing and writing as a child, and then photography and textile arts. Born in Poland, I grew up in Winnipeg, and have now lived in Kelowna for the past 20 years. Creativity has always been a solitary Endeavor, forged in isolation, and kept hidden. I only began to engage with an artistic community online in 2022. when I enrolled in the Creative Visionary Program at Art2Life. Learning the fundamentals of design, value, and color has been invigorating as I try to hone my artistic language. The social isolation of the past couple of years is reminiscent of bouts of psychological isolation in childhood and into adulthood. This physical isolation, however, has allowed me to delve deep into painting practice.

I am drawn to the quiet human moments, the inner world of fears and dreams. How one’s inner world can be oppressive and debilitating, and what it takes to engage with the outer world. I am looking for a glimpse of the human condition in the everyday mundane.
