Capes by Kathryn Hatcher
Biography
Kathryn Hatcher is a Kelowna based artist whose work is inspired by a 17th century Jacobean embroidery art form. As a retired teacher she enjoys the freedom to pursue her creative outlet in the medium of fabric art.
Beginning in the 1990’s Kathryn took a course in hand quilting and applique' techniques. From that point on she found an outlet to express her love of design and colour using textiles.
As a self-taught fabric artist Kathryn blends her love of applique', textiles and fashion to create unique wall hangings and wearable art.
Her wall hangings use bold colourful cotton fabrics to attract attention, brighten wall spaces while at the same time enhancing colours within the space.
Her capes are created using Italian Melton wool and ultra suede accented with Akoya buttons. These components blend together creating warmth, vibrancy of colours and design.
Kathryn’s passion for detail ensures each piece of her hand-stitched creations keeps a past artform alive while offering a modern twist in design and colour palette.
As an emerging fabric artist, Kathryn has exhibited her work in the Sidney Fine Art Show, Mary Winspear Center, Sidney, BC and hopes to show her works in the Okanagan.
Artist Statement
My art allows me time to become immersed in what brings me joy. I use bright and bold fabric colours while ensuring my work reflects balance and harmony throughout.
My love of hand quilting and applique' started when I took a class based on patterns adapted from17th century Jacobean embroidery designs. The challenge of creating visually interesting pieces using a renaissance art form which appeals to today’s audience inspires my work.
Through the medium of textiles I blend colour and shapes to achieve wall hangings of whimsy, based on flora and fauna found in nature.
In the past few years I have applied applique' techniques to create wearable art. By using Melton wool from Italy and Akoya buttons from the sea, I have created patterns from nature to embelish women’s capes.
Since moving to the Kelowna, the incredible vistas of the lake, forests and skies have enhanced my desire to reflect the beauty of nature in my fabric art pieces.
Although my website has not been renewed since moving to Kelowna the end of 2019, I continue to successfully market my fashion capes through my email address – [email protected]
