Madelyn Hamilton

In the Atrium

Artist Statement

I reside on a wilderness ravine edge, which is a key source and influence for my earth-based creations. As the natural world is shared by human species, my depictions of nature are often imbedded with signs of human activity. The associated colours, energies, and life forms of my surrounding environment are internall absorbed, to be later expressed in semi-abstract ideas.

I frequently work with wood, which allows me to shape organic edges. I create strong visual design structures and utilize multiple textures through the use of acrylic and various objects. Brush strokes are given freedom. There is no formula. The work is layered and worked on, commonly over a lengthy period of time. A conclusion occurs only when the idea has been fulfilled.

My intent and purpose is for the viewer to contemplate, examine, and take away a new awareness of their natural surroundings and of the marks we leave behind.
