About the Orchard Valley Quilter's Guild
Our guild is for lovers of fabric, fibre, and friendship. 40 years young! Established in 1982. The Orchard Valley Quilters Guild meets every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon from September through May at the Okanagan Mission Hall (corner of Lakeshore and DeHart) in Kelowna, British Columbia. Our meetings provide members with friendship, support, inspiration and encouragement. We welcome quilters and fabric artists of all levels of expertise. Our members practice traditional, modern, hand, machine, and art quilting. Meetings are a great place to learn, socialize and exchange ideas.
Orchard Valley Quilt Guild members dedicate our time to designing, sewing and quilting baby quilts for community organizations. We donate about 500 quilts each year. The Neonatal Unit at KGH receives most of the quilts. West Kelowna Nurse Family Partnership, Kelowna Community Resources, Salvation Army and Women’s Shelters received recently quilts. The Guild supplies the batting and some of the fabrics for these quilts. The fabrics are donated by individuals that contact the Guild through our website, often when faced with a family member’s stash as they downsize. OVQG members are a diverse group. Traditional quilters teach the skills needed to sew. Art and Modern quilters take those skills in new directions. We all share ideas and help each other as we try new techniques. Check out our website for Show and Tell pictures of our work and information on joining our Guild.
MODley Crew:
This small group of modern quilters started in 2015 in an attempt to fill a gap that existed in “normal” sewing/quilting techniques used, and to draw younger, modern crafters into our guild as members and into what had been a mostly traditional quilting world. Our modern quilters can do either small art pieces or (most commonly) smaller quilts for the KGH – Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Modern quilting can break down “traditional” block formations and colors in order to reform them in different more simplified ways. It also stresses the creation of “free form” quilts & art pieces that incorporate more space, challenge the norm and allow the actual quilting patterns of a piece to shine. The fabrics/colors used in modern quilting are plain and bright - usually from the primary group on the color wheel such as blue, white, green, yellow, red, and black, and rarely have any decorative printing on them. Come and join us and find out just how creative you thought your brain could be!
Handfuls:
The Handfuls’ is the pet name we gave our sub group of quilters who love to hand stitch. All types of stitching happened here, from modern and traditional to primitive as well as elaborate forms of embroidery. These members are true artists and find hand work joyful and relaxing. We welcome all skill levels and encourage growth through demonstrating and practice.
