Modern Pictorialism: An Exploration of Digital Rendering
Artist Statement
My photographic work is an ongoing exploration of mood, perception, and the emotional resonance of imagery. While I resist being confined to a single genre, my approach is best described as modern pictorialism—an interpretation of photography that prioritizes atmosphere, tonality, and storytelling over strict representation.
I am drawn to images that suggest rather than define. Some of my work leans toward the dark and introspective; other pieces are bright, graphic, and immediate. This contrast reflects my interest in the full emotional range that photography can convey.
Often, I capture an image instinctively and only later reflect on what compelled me to press the shutter. That moment becomes the starting point for a deeper creative process. Through post-processing, I explore subconscious influences, allowing each image to evolve beyond its original form. This process frequently introduces a painterly quality, where texture, colour, and composition become as important as the subject itself.
In my recent Macro and Infrared work, I move further into abstraction. By manipulating organic forms and textures, I aim to create images that are both familiar and ambiguous – anchored in reality, yet open to interpretation. Having worked with photography for many years, it is only now that I feel I am reaching a more meaningful and expressive level in my practice. My current work reflects a willingness to experiment, to question, and to follow ideas wherever they lead.
