April 21, 2025National Volunteer Week 2025: Making Waves in Arts & Culture

April 27 to May 3 is National Volunteer Week – a time to celebrate the importance of volunteers in our community and highlight the crucial work they do. At the RCA, we rely heavily on our volunteers for all our day-to-day operations. Each volunteer helps us bring arts and culture alive in the Okanagan, and we would not be able to achieve this without their help. As a non-profit organization, volunteers are crucial in maintaining our live performances, arts education programs, community programs, and more.

The theme for this year's National Volunteer Week is Volunteers Make Waves. Like a wave, the contributions of volunteers are always in motion – flowing and transforming, creating movement in the communities around them.

Our team of volunteers completed an impressive total of 3,073 volunteer hours in 2024, from ticket taking at theatre shows to setting up paint nights in the atrium. Their dedication to assisting in all RCA programming ensures that every event runs smoothly and creates a welcoming, vibrant experience for our community.

In preparation for National Volunteer Week, we spoke to a few RCA Volunteers to learn more about them and hear about their experiences in the world of volunteering. We want to shine a spotlight on these volunteers and the meaningful contributions they've made to the Rotary Centre for the Arts, along with recognizing the dedication of all our incredible volunteers.

Wilma Griffin | RCA Volunteer for 20 Years

“I grew up in Winnipeg and I have always enjoyed the theatre and cultural events there. When I moved out to Kelowna in 2005, I was worried that I would miss all that. I had made an earlier trip out to Kelowna on a house hunting mission and while staying at the Delta, I ventured out one evening and came upon the RCA.

I was with a friend, and we ventured inside to check things out. I still remember there was a tribute concert going on for Janis Joplin and I was so impressed that such great entertainment was happening here in this lovely venue. From that moment on I knew that I would love to be part of the RCA. So, shortly after I moved here in 2005, I signed up to volunteer at the RCA and have been volunteering for 20 years now.

I have always been impressed with the architecture both inside and outside of this beautiful building and I am proud to show family and friends that visit our beautiful facility.

I enjoy the comradery and the making of new friendships through the years with my fellow volunteers.

When asked by people who have just moved here etc., ‘How do you meet people?’  I answer, ‘just come and volunteer and you will meet lovely people.’

What gives me the biggest joy volunteering is when patrons exit from the Mary Irwin Theatre with a smile on their face and tell me how much they enjoyed themselves.”

Jollean McFarlen | RCA Volunteer for 30 Years

“I have been volunteering with the Rotary Centre for the Arts for over 30 years. I first joined the RCA though a theater group doing costumes which eventually led to volunteering for shows and decorating. It's my favourite place to work. Many years ago, I was part of making the Christmas decor that goes up around the RCA every year and it makes me happy to see it on display each holiday season.

I love going to Jazz Jam on Thursdays and also the monthly Blues Night (formerly School of Blues). I have so many fabulous memories volunteering at the RCA, the people are always very thoughtful, fun, kind and unique.”

Vi Fournell | RCA Volunteer for 10 Years

“I enjoy traveling, meeting new people, and having fun with friends. I have lived all across Canada working in the health field. I enjoy being active and lifelong learning. I have always enjoyed the arts.  I loved the RCA building and made my decision to volunteer here when I retired. I have been volunteering at the RCA for 10 years.

My favourite memories volunteering at the RCA are the galas they hosted and the Day of the Dead party that happened over some Halloween's.

My advice to someone considering volunteering is that if you enjoy the arts, enjoy people and willing to work with a team, you will enjoy RCA.”

Diane Stoliker | RCA Volunteer for 3 Years

“I enjoy getting to know people. I especially enjoy sharing a laugh with others. I like to travel and hope to soon get to Europe.

I joined as a volunteer at the RCA after retiring. I wanted to get out and see what I’d been missing. I’ve now been volunteering with the RCA for 3 years.

One of my favourite memories while volunteering was the Bird Strike conference. I really didn’t know what to expect. It turned out the attendees were responsible for managing wildlife at airports. These folks were from all over the world sharing stories of rhinoceroses, elephants, etc., getting in the way of airplanes. It was very interesting.

The advice I would give to someone considering volunteering is, give it a try. There is a variety of events to choose from and there is a lot of flexibility as to one’s commitment.”

“Some fun facts about me are I like sports and interacting with people, I’m a Nana, I love a thunderstorm during the summer, and I never miss a meal.

I decided to become a volunteer because it’s the best way to give back to the community you choose to live in. You meet the nicest people. I have been volunteering with the RCA for 8 years.

I have lots of favourite memories with the RCA. Signing up for shows I know nothing about and experiencing a truly special moment with the audience.

If you are thinking of volunteering, do it.  Take a chance.”

Nicole Leblanc | RCA Volunteer for 1 Year

“I am the youngest of 13 children! A typical Quebec family at that time. I grew up in Quebec and while working in a halfway house as a counsellor, I came across a job offer to teach French in Campbell River, BC. I knew it was for me. I was 27 years old, so up and out I went to BC. I met my husband there and we had two children. We moved to different regions over the years, finally settling in Kelowna, where I became interested in event planning.

I retired in 2019 and haven't stopped. I learn every day and give as much as I can to my family and community.

I regularly volunteer with different organizations; RCA being the latest addition to my commitments where I have been volunteering since the fall of 2024.

I truly enjoy connecting with the happy RCA patrons, their enthusiasm for the shows/concerts they pay to see is contagious and I cannot help but feel happy with them. Try volunteering, you’ll see!”

Take it from these volunteers – volunteering within your community is a truly rewarding experience! If you are interested in volunteering with the RCA, we are now accepting applications here.
