May 4, 2026Wellness Through the Arts

At the Rotary Centre for the Arts, we believe creativity is not separate from well-being. It is essential to it. With Wellness Through the Arts, we offer organisations a meaningful way to support their teams, not only as professionals, but as people.

This approach is grounded in both experience and research. The Canadians’ Arts Participation, Health, and Well-Being report finds that individuals who engage in arts and culture are more likely to report better mental and overall health, along with stronger connections to their communities. On a global scale, the World Health Organization has also found that engagement in the arts can support people across the full spectrum of health, including prevention, care, and recovery. At RCA, we see these outcomes reflected in our programs every day, as creativity becomes a pathway to both personal well-being and collective connection.

Our Program Coordinator, Angela Roy, states “I have seen how this initiative connects meaningfully with community partners, including universities and colleges. Through creative wellness activities, the program fosters intercultural understanding and builds connections across generations. It creates inclusive spaces where diverse perspectives are shared, strengthening community bonds. Its reach continues to grow, offering a platform that brings people together through the shared language of arts and well-being.”

A Holistic Approach to Workplace Wellness

Wellness in the workplace is often approached through quick solutions or one-time initiatives. At RCA, we take a more thoughtful approach. Wellness Through the Arts is designed to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being through creative engagement.

By stepping outside of routine and into an artistic environment, participants are given permission to slow down, reflect, and reconnect. This shift can reduce stress, improve focus, and open the door to more authentic communication within teams. Creativity becomes a shared experience, one that strengthens both individual resilience and group dynamics.

Creating Space to Pause and Connect

Each session is guided by experienced facilitators who foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Participants are encouraged to engage at their own pace, with no pressure to perform or produce. This approach allows individuals to feel comfortable, which in turn supports openness, trust, and genuine interaction.

These shared moments of creativity often lead to stronger interpersonal connections. Teams leave with a deeper understanding of one another, which can positively influence communication and collaboration back in the workplace.

Programs Designed for All Abilities

Our program offerings reflect a wide range of creative entry points, ensuring accessibility for all participants.

Rhythmic Arts brings teams together through music. Using rhythm as a foundation, participants engage in collaborative activities that build listening skills, coordination, and group awareness. No prior musical experience is required, making it an approachable and engaging way to connect.

Movement Art focuses on gentle, guided physical activity led by qualified dance instructors. These sessions support physical well-being, mobility, and body awareness while remaining inclusive and adaptable to all ability levels.

Visual Arts sessions invite participants to explore painting, collage-making, and drawing. Facilitated by experienced artists, these workshops encourage self-expression and creativity in a relaxed environment. The process of making becomes just as important as the final piece.

Sound Bath and Relax offers a restorative experience rooted in stillness and sound. Through the use of quartz crystal singing bowls and voice activation, participants are immersed in calming tones that support relaxation, reflection, and mental clarity.

The Sounds of Handbells provides a unique opportunity to create music together in a structured yet accessible way. Participants work collaboratively to produce a shared musical outcome, strengthening teamwork and communication.

The Art of Storytelling explores narrative as both a personal and professional tool. Guided by an experienced storyteller, participants develop confidence, empathy, and communication skills that can translate directly into leadership and workplace dynamics.

Real Experiences, Lasting Impact

The impact of Wellness Through the Arts is reflected in the experiences of the organisations we work with and in the program’s continued growth. In 2025, we engaged 224 participants through a series of sessions delivered in collaboration with partners including the University of British Columbia Okanagan, regional educators through COTA Teachers’ Conventions, and Okanagan College supporting adult learners with developmental considerations.

In 2026, participation has already grown to 245 participants. This steady increase highlights both the expanding reach of the program and the strength of our partnerships, as we continue to deliver meaningful, arts-based wellness experiences across the community.

These numbers come to life through the moments shared in our studios. Tourism Kelowna joined us for a visual arts session focused on ink techniques. Guided by RCA instructor Gail Hodgson, team members spent the afternoon creating handcrafted cards. The studio became a space for conversation, creativity, and connection. Participants left with a tangible piece of artwork and a renewed sense of camaraderie.

Westbank First Nation participated in multiple sessions, including rhythmic and visual arts. Led by Program Coordinator Angela Roy, the group explored music-making through handcrafted instruments and collaborated in a shared performance. These sessions created moments of curiosity, engagement, and collective achievement that extended beyond the workshops themselves.

Why It Matters

When organisations invest in well-being, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. Teams that feel connected, supported, and engaged are better equipped to communicate, collaborate, and adapt.

Wellness Through the Arts supports:

  • Reduced stress and mental fatigue • Improved communication and teamwork
  • Increased creativity and problem-solving
  • Stronger interpersonal relationships
  • A greater sense of workplace satisfaction

By integrating creativity into wellness, organisations can foster environments where people feel valued and inspired.
