There is something special about watching a blank wall become a story. Over the past several months, the Rotary Centre for the Arts has been filled with the energy, imagination, and creativity of local youth as they worked together to transform six empty panels into a vibrant public mural that will inspire visitors for years to come. 

The Youth Mural Project 2026 was much more than a painting project; it was a journey of learning, collaboration, cultural discovery, and community connection. Every great mural begins with a conversation, and this one was no different. Guided by Lead Artist Gail Hodgson and Facilitator Rain Doody, a group of young artists gathered to share ideas about what makes the Okanagan special. They talked about the land, the lakes, the forests, the people, and the sense of belonging that comes from living in such a remarkable place. As ideas flowed, sketches evolved into a shared vision that reflected not only the beauty of the landscape but also the relationships that connect people to one another and to the environment. 

As the project unfolded, the youth had the opportunity to learn from community members whose knowledge brought greater depth and meaning to the artwork. Syilx/Okanagan Nation Knowledge Keeper Jasmine Peone generously shared teachings about native plants and the importance of respecting the land. Her guidance helped ensure that the mural celebrated Indigenous knowledge with care and authenticity. Slowly, the mural began to take shape. Native plants with deep cultural and ecological significance emerged across the wall, including Bitter Root, Oregon Grape, Spring Beauty, Kinnikinnick, Arrowleaf Balsamroot, and the majestic Ponderosa Pine. Mountains rose behind them, lakes reflected changing skies, and wildlife blended into patterns inspired by the rhythms of nature. Intertwining roots spread beneath the landscape, reminding viewers that every community is strengthened by the connections that exist below the surface. What emerged was a mural that invites viewers to pause, look closely, and discover new details each time they visit. 

The project reached its joyful conclusion on June 17, 2026, when community members, families, project partners, educators, artists, and supporters gathered at the Rotary Centre for the Arts to celebrate the official unveiling during the Creative Aging Festival. The afternoon was filled with gratitude and celebration as Executive Director Colleen Fitzpatrick welcomed guests and reflected on the importance of community arts. Pamela Barnes and Wilfred (Grouse) Barnes offered a heartfelt Syilx/Okanagan welcome, grounding the event in the traditions of the territory. Gail Hodgson and Rain Doody shared stories from the creative journey, while each youth artist was recognized with a Rotary Centre for the Arts certificate celebrating their dedication and achievement. The installation of a commemorative plaque featuring Okanagan language elements completed the project, ensuring that the cultural significance of the mural will continue to be shared with future visitors. 

Although the mural now stands complete, its greatest impact may never be measured by paint or panels alone. 

Throughout the project, the participating youth discovered what it means to work collaboratively, solve creative challenges, listen to different perspectives, and contribute to something larger than themselves. They developed artistic techniques while gaining valuable experience in public art, community engagement, environmental stewardship, and respectful cultural learning. These are lessons that will remain with them long after the brushes have been cleaned and the scaffolding has been taken away. 

Today, visitors to the Rotary Centre for the Arts are welcomed by more than a beautiful mural. Every brushstroke tells a story of curiosity, learning, friendship, and hope. Every image reflects a shared commitment to caring for the land, celebrating cultural diversity, and building a community where everyone belongs.
