April 17, 2023Artists Helping Artists - Fostering Artistic Growth at the RCA

Here at the RCA, we strive to create a space where artists can flourish. Through community programs, artists spaces, workshops, and events, the RCA can provide outlets for your craft to grow. Our accessible and free programs act as a launch pad to expand your practice, whether it’s a hobby or a career.

Our Open Mic Nights are a great example of this. Running every first, third, and fifth Tuesday, musicians, poets, and comedians are invited to step up to the mic. The laid back, casual atmosphere helps encourage those just starting out as well as those with plenty of experience under their belt. Chris Patton, an Open Mic regular, has grown her musical experience exponentially through our Open Mic Night program.

“I feel it is a perfect opportunity for artists who don't have an outlet to be heard - be it music, stand-up comedy, or poetry” says Chris. “It is a safe and open atmosphere to showcase one's talent - at any stage of the game.”

When Chris first attended Open Mic Night last summer (2022), she was there to support her friend, Cindy, who was reading poetry. Our Open Mic Nights were just gaining traction, but there was still a ways to go in terms of turn out. She noticed there was a need for more performers, so she happily obliged and started singing acapella.

“I have been a singer my whole life and had had a jazz ensemble in Ontario for several years, and missed singing. I kept going back and singing, just for the fun of it.”

Because of her experience at Open Mic Night, she decided to keep her singing career going in the Okanagan.

“I now have a musical partner, Gil Kafka, who plays guitar magically. We had our first gig at the Hyatt Place, Kelowna, on Valentine's Day and it was a success! Gil and I tested some of our material on two occasions at Open Mic Night. They were applauded and so we ran with them. A great chance to showcase what we were working on!”

Open Mic Night gave Chris the chance to return to singing and grow her craft; an opportunity that may not have arisen if accessible programs like this did not exist. Her performances with Kris in this welcoming environment allowed her and Kris to keep practicing before hitting the stage in their first real gig together.

“I had been missing singing and wondering how I could move such a career forward. To end up performing songs I love with a collaborative and talented musician was a dream come true for me. The show was a success and the room was full! That felt good.”

“I truly believe that the Rotary Centre for the Arts is the place of celebration of the arts here in Kelowna. The many and diverse offerings make it a place for everyone to enjoy. I love the programs and entertainment and have participated in several, besides the Open Mic Night - I have participated in the Jazz Night, watched Blues, taken Latin dance lessons, watched performances in the Mary Irwin Theatre, and have dined at the bistro on the premises. All were amazing experiences - well organized and with friendly people.”

We are thrilled to be able to provide free, accessible programs like Open Mic Night to artists around us. As a non-profit organization, it is thanks to generous sponsors and donations from those in our community that help us continue to deliver arts and culture experiences that foster growth. We can’t wait to hear more success stories of artists emerging within our space like Chris.
