The Rotary Centre for the Arts (RCA) is thrilled to announce the completion of Phase 3, the final stage, of the Mary Irwin Theatre's lighting upgrade project. This milestone marks the conclusion of a multi-year investment in our theatre infrastructure, ensuring that artists and audiences alike experience the highest quality productions in our downtown cultural hub.

A $350,000 Investment in the Arts
The Phase 3 upgrade, valued at $100,000, was made possible through funding from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF), Heritage Canada. With this final stage completed, the total investment across all three phases of the lighting project has reached $350,000.
We are deeply grateful to the funders who made this vision possible:
-
Phase 1 - Infrastructure, Province of BC
-
Phase 2 - Enhancements, Heritage Canada
-
Phase 3 - LED fixtures, consoles, and rigging, Heritage Canada
Our Capital Infrastructure Fund (CIF) continues to be a very key resource. Phase 3 of the Mary Irwin Theatre lighting upgrade was completed in August 2025, funded through a $50,000 contribution from the Province of BC, matched by CIF reserves and the federal Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. The total $350,000 investment over three years ensures professional-standard technical infrastructure for artists and audiences.
In May 2025, the RCA's Mary Irwin Theatre added a $36,000 sound upgrade, made possible by the BC Arts Council Arts Infrastructure Grant. This upgrade improved the quality of productions and ensured RCA continues to serve as a key resource, supporting the growth and sustainability of Kelowna's arts ecosystem.
We also extend our thanks to the organizations whose letters of support strengthened our applications and underscored the importance of this project: Okanagan College, Inner Fish Performance Co., and Opera Kelowna. Your continued partnership is invaluable.
Phase 3 Technical Improvements
Phase 3 introduced a suite of state-of-the-art LED fixtures, upgraded control consoles, and industry leading atmosphere haze that bring the Mary Irwin Theatre in line with professional industry standards. These improvements:
-
Expand the range and precision of lighting design available to artists and technicians.
-
Enhance color rendering and dynamic effects, allowing for richer, more immersive stage environments.
-
Streamline technical operations with digital control systems that improve reliability and ease of use.
-
Reduce the theatre’s environmental footprint by lowering energy consumption and cutting down on the need for replacement bulbs and equipment.
Together, these technical upgrades create a theatre environment that is more flexible, sustainable, and inspiring for everyone who steps onto the stage or into the audience.

What This Means for Artists and Audiences
The final phase introduced advanced lighting technologies designed to:
-
Provide greater creative flexibility for artists and visiting productions.
-
Enhance the visual experience for audiences, ensuring sharper, more dynamic stage presentations.
-
Improve energy efficiency and sustainability, reducing operating costs and environmental impact.
-
Modernize the theatre with state-of-the-art systems that support professional touring productions.
This upgrade not only strengthens the RCA’s ability to host a wide range of performances, from theatre and dance to concerts and community events, but also reinforces our commitment to supporting local and touring artists with the tools they need to deliver their best work.
Looking Ahead
With all three phases now complete, the Mary Irwin Theatre is equipped to serve our community for years to come. This project reflects what is possible when public funding, community support, and audience participation come together to invest in the arts.
